Tenuta San Guido is a point of reference for Tuscan wine, located between Livorno and Grosseto, born from the marriage between the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta and Clarice della Gherardesca. In 1983, Tenuta San Guido became the first estate in Italy to receive its own denomination with the consecration of the D.O.C Bolgheri Sassicaia.

Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido is one of the most iconic wines of Tuscany, both for its history and for its extreme quality. Lover of great wines, Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta was seduced by an Italian wine whose bouquet reminded him of an old Bordeaux wine. From then on, this aristocrat's ambition was to produce a Tuscan wine that could compete with the greatest names in Bordeaux. A pioneer, he decided to break with the traditional Tuscan vines (sangiovese and nebbiolo) by planting cabernet sauvignon in 1942, something that had never been done here, on a stony Tuscan terroir with many similarities to the gravelly soils typical of the Medoc.

Eager to refine the quality of his wine, Mario was advised by his cousin Piero Antinori, descendant of the illustrious family of wine merchants, and by the oenologist Giacomo Tachis. His pursuit of excellence includes diversification of grape varieties, control of yields and changes in ripening methods. Cabernet Franc was planted on the estate in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, and the winemaking process was carried out according to Bordeaux know-how.

1968 is the first vintage revealed to the general public. This wine surprised as much as it fascinated and international critics were very enthusiastic. Since then, every release of a new Sassicaia vintage is an event for lovers of great Italian wines.
