Marjan Simčič - Sauvignon Blanc Opoka 2022

In 1860, Jožef Simčič purchased a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. Since then, the Simčič family has been dedicated to cultivating vines with supreme attention and care.

The “Opoka” Sauvignon is one of the most elegant and complex expressions of Marjan Simčič, a brilliant and passionate winemaker from Goriška Brda, the Slovenian side of the Collio region. After years of experience and scientific study, Marjan identified the most mineral-rich soils, composed of opoka (calcareous marl), and dedicated them to producing his most important and prestigious wines.

The “Opoka” Sauvignon comes from grapes harvested in a single, nearly 50-year-old vineyard called Jordano, located at 250 meters above sea level. Marjan Simčič’s winemaking philosophy is centered on enhancing the natural characteristics of the land and grapes. He practices organic farming without the use of pesticides, and in the cellar he intervenes as little as possible. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in 40-hl truncated-cone oak vats, with four days of skin contact to extract aromatic richness. The wine is bottled during the waning moon phase without fining or filtration. A long aging process—23 months in 3-hl oak barrels and at least 4 months in bottle—completes the production, resulting in a complex wine with great aging potential.

Simčič’s “Opoka” Sauvignon shows a deep straw yellow color in the glass, with golden hues that intensify over time. The bouquet is rich and complex, displaying elegance and precision, with prominent notes of fruit and aromatic herbs: peach, citrus peel, elderflower, paprika, tomato leaf, and basil. A complex hint of leather adds character and personality to the aromatic profile. On the palate, it is intense, smooth, and enveloping, with great richness and endless persistence.
