Marjan Simčič - Ribolla Gialla Opoka 2021

In 1860, Jožef Simčič purchased a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. Since then, the Simčič family has been dedicated to cultivating vines with supreme attention and care.

The Ribolla Gialla “Opoka” by Marjan Simčič is a true standout in its category, combining rich complexity with an irresistibly juicy drinkability. Ribolla is the emblematic grape of the Collio region—deeply tied to the local winegrowers in a relationship of both love and frustration. While it has enormous potential, it's notoriously demanding and temperamental. Marjan, a descendant of Jozef Simčič who founded the estate in 1860, proves that only deep knowledge of the grape and a refined sensitivity can give birth to wines of such caliber. His 20-hectare estate—70% planted with white varieties—is cultivated without the use of synthetic chemicals, allowing the vines to fully express the unique character of the terroir and vintage. Each parcel is vinified individually according to its specific traits and needs.

This Opoka Ribolla Gialla comes from a single cru and belongs to Marjan’s top-tier wine range. The approach is deeply traditional and respectful of nature: no chemicals in the vineyard, manual harvesting, and spontaneous fermentations in large truncated conical oak vats lasting around 6 days with skin contact. No selected yeasts are added, and the wine undergoes no filtration or fining—a true expression of terroir. It ages for 8 months in 4,000-liter oak barrels and an additional 11 months in 500-liter oak barrels before bottling.

In the glass, it shines with an intense golden color tinged with subtle orange reflections. The nose is stunning in its depth and power, seamlessly alternating mineral notes with toasted nuances, and revealing great finesse and harmony. On the palate, it's flavorful and broad, yet lively and vibrant, held together by a solid backbone of saltiness and freshness.
