In 1860, Jožef Simčič purchased a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. Since then, the Simčič family has been dedicated to cultivating vines with supreme attention and care.
The Pinot Noir Opoka represents the pinnacle of Marjan Simčič's dedication to terroir-driven winemaking in Slovenia's Goriška Brda region. Sourced from the esteemed Medana Breg Cru vineyard, this wine showcases the unique characteristics of the opoka soil—a calcareous marl that imparts distinctive minerality and elegance.
The Pinot Noir Opoka comes from the Medana Breg cru in the heart of Slovenia’s Goriška Brda, where 45-year-old vines grow on mineral-rich opoka soils – a type of calcareous marl that brings elegance and a distinctive minerality to the wine. The vineyards are east-facing, located at elevations between 150 and 250 meters, and farmed organically with manual harvesting. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, followed by about 14 days of skin maceration in large oak truncated-cone vats. The wine is then aged for 27 months in French oak barriques (up to 30% new), unfiltered, and spends an additional 10 months in bottle before release.
