Marjan Simčič - Merlot Opoka 2019

In 1860, Jožef Simčič purchased a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. Since then, the Simčič family has been dedicated to cultivating vines with supreme attention and care.

The Merlot "Opoka" is one of the finest and most expressive red wines from Marjan Simčič, an outstanding and passionate winemaker from Goriška Brda, the Slovenian Collio. Deeply rooted in tradition and committed to low-intervention, organic viticulture, Marjan carefully selects only the best plots rich in opoka (marl and limestone) to craft his most important and age-worthy wines.

The 2019 vintage is made exclusively from Merlot grapes grown in the Trobno Cru, a historic vineyard located at 250 meters above sea level, characterized by old vines and mineral-rich soils. The vines are farmed organically without synthetic treatments, and the winemaking follows a natural philosophy, with spontaneous fermentation using wild yeasts and minimal intervention throughout the process.

Fermentation takes place in 40 hl oak truncated-cone vats, with a skin maceration of 25 days. The wine is then aged for 48 months in small oak barrels (225 L), followed by a period of bottle aging to enhance structure and complexity. It is bottled unfiltered, during the waning moon, to respect the natural rhythm of the wine.

In the glass, the Merlot Opoka shows a deep ruby red color with garnet reflections. The nose is intense and layered, offering aromas of ripe black fruits, plum, dried herbs, dark chocolate, leather, and earthy mineral tones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with refined tannins, remarkable depth, and a long, elegant finish that reflects both the terroir and the vintage.
