Marjan Simčič - Chardonnay Opoka 2022

In 1860, Jožef Simčič purchased a farm in Medana and began vine growing and winemaking. Since then, the Simčič family has been dedicated to cultivating vines with supreme attention and care.

The Chardonnay Opoka by Marjan Simčič is a wine that seamlessly combines opulence and complexity, offering a rare expression of finesse and depth. The Opoka line represents the pinnacle of Simčič’s production—wines born from specific crus planted with old vines that yield grapes of extraordinary quality. In the hills of Brda, Marjan cultivates 18 hectares of vineyards spread between Slovenia and Italy, home to varieties such as Ribolla, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignonasse, and more. These are authentic interpretations that favor rich fruit expression, achieving a harmonious balance between indulgence and precision. A must-try for true wine lovers.

The Chardonnay Opoka is made from a meticulous selection of old-vine Chardonnay, sourced from the most vocated parcels of the estate. It is produced only in vintages deemed exceptional by Marjan himself, following strict criteria and undergoing long oak aging. After manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and macerated on the skins for about 4 days in large 3,000-liter oak vats. The wine is then aged for 23 months in 2,500-liter oak barrels, followed by an additional 4 months in glass before release.

In the glass, it reveals a deep golden hue, verging on amber. The bouquet is remarkably rich and defined, with aromas of melted butter, hazelnuts, honey, and dried fruit. Subtle toasty notes from the oak aging enhance the aromatic complexity without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet silky, with a velvety texture lifted by a spine of salinity and freshness. The finish is long, cohesive, and endlessly persistent—a majestic white wine, perfect for special occasions.
