Col d'Orcia - Brunello di Montalcino 1977
Col d'Orcia - Brunello di Montalcino 1977
SKU:
Col d'Orcia has a history that has its roots in the nineteenth century. In fact, the purchase of the property by the Franceschi family, originally from Florence, dates back to 1890 and gave the first and fundamental impetus to the already established production of Brunello.
The next turning point came in 1973, when the Piedmontese Cinzano took over the entire property and used their already extensive liqueur commercial network to increase sales of the Tuscan estate's wines. Today, over a century later, Col d'Orcia is the third largest producer in terms of volumes of the entire denomination, the first in Tuscany for the extension of vineyards cultivated according to the dictates of organic farming.
Despite these very important numbers, Col d'Orcia manages to always express excellent production, of great quality not only in its "Poggio al Vento", one of the best Brunellos in all of Montalcino, but also and above all in the entire remaining line. The scenario is that of the southern area of the Montalcino territory: this is where the 540 hectares of company property meet, of which at the moment just under 150 are under vineyards. In a microclimate protected by Mount Amiata and mitigated by the sea breezes coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the rows host both native varieties, such as Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Moscadello di Montalcino, as well as international grapes, such as Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay , petit verdot and syrah.
Bunches that are transformed in the cellar with rigor and method: a careful selection is followed by fermentation with maceration on the skins, in steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Subsequently, the aging is carried out in Slavonian oak barrels and in French oak barriques, where the wine can mature for up to four years.
