Probably the most sumptuous of the Grand Cru Classé. Initially classified in 1855 as Duexième Cru, it was the only one to be promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru in 1973. Its wines are distinguished by the rich notes of cassis and cigar that appear in all vintages. Chateau Mouton Rothschild is rich in history and innovation. He was the first, in 1920, to directly bottle all the production (in the past the negociants used to bottle the wine).

The Chateau is famous for the very high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in its wines, the highest in the Medoc. Currently its vineyards are planted with 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Its vineyards are located in the Grand Plateau de Mouton, bordering the Grand Plateau de Lafite, it is incredibly composed of 98% gravel terroir and only 2% clay.

The vineyards are particularly old, some parts even reaching 120 years. The cellar was completely renovated in 2013 and is made up of 20 steel vats and 44 wooden barrels to allow each parcel to be vinified individually. The wine is always refined in new barriques.
Another distinctive sign of Mouton is the label, which since 1945 has been entrusted to a different artist every year. Over the decades many important names in art have lent their work to Mouton Rothschild.

Just to mention a few we can mention: Pablo Picasso 1973, John Huston 1982, Keith Haring 1988 and lastly the Chinese artist Xu Bing for 2018. In addition to the Grand Vin the company produces a second wine, Petit Mouton, and a white wine the Aile d'Argent classified as Bordeaux Blanc.
